The Oakland Children’s Community Choir (OCCC) is a five-month music education and performance program provided free of charge to under served Oakland public elementary schools with little or no access to the arts. The program is inspirational with a distinctive approach to music education. It addresses Living Jazz’s belief that education in the creative arts is a profound and necessary component of each child’s education and development.
OCCC provides progressive, sequential music skill building and personal learning opportunities for 250 first through fourth graders during the regular school day. It culminates in a performance called, In the Name of Love, the Annual Musical Tribute Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The program exposes children to a comprehensive music fundamental curriculum that covers a variety of musical styles within the context of the work of Dr. King and the Civil Rights Movement. It uses music learning to build self-esteem and confidence in young students, while also providing an experience of community and connectedness that crosses cultural and economic boundaries.
